Chrétien de Troyes
Chrétien de Troyes (fl. circa 1160 – circa 1190) is generally credited as being the founder of Arthurian romance. He is the author of five verse romances, four of them Arthurian (Erec et Enide, Lancelot ou le Chevalier de la charrette, Yvain ou le Chevalier au lion, Perceval ou Le Conte du Graal) and one with Arthurian connections (Cligés), in which he promotes and analyzes an heroic ideal combining chevalerie (knightly valor) and courtoisie (courtliness). He is a notable figure of world literature.
