Marie de France was a French writer living in England during the second half of the 12th century. She is one of the most important female authors, if not the most important, in medieval Europe at that time, and possibly of the entire Middle Ages. Her enduring claim to fame is her collection of twelve Lais, narrative poems drawn from Breton sources.

Bisclavret is the fourth of the Lays of Marie de France, in the order of the one manuscript that includes all twelve (British Library, Harley 978). It is a rousing tale of love, loyalty, betrayal, and lycanthropy.

Lanval

Lanval is the fifth of the Lays of Marie de France, in the order of the one manuscript that includes all twelve (British Museum, Harley 978). It is a classic fairy tale, featuring a fairy lady of the “high” (i.e., noble) variety, and is also notable for being situated at King Arthur’s court.
