I am struck by how this sentence encapsulates the moroseness of Klaus Kinski’s depiction of the famous Count and more generally the moroseness of the whole film. (Werner Herzog was undoubtedly inspired by this sentence from Bram Stoker’s Dracula: “I love the shade and the shadow, and would be alone with my thoughts when I may.”)
