Whitehead is famous for having said (and repeatedly, in Relgiion in the Making) that “religion is what one does with his own solitariness.” Again, “religion is solitariness, and if you are never solitary, you are never religious.” However, this quasi-necessary phase of personal development does not contradict the fact that the individual of any kind always exists in and through “society” (a technical-philosophical term for Whitehead).
Whitehead uses the noun “solitariness,” which can even be plural; modern French has the adjective solitaire, occasionally substantivized, but nothing corresponding to Whitehead’s noun “solitariness.” Hence one has to fall back upon solitude. I use the plural, perhaps not justifiably, to underline that more than one individual solitariness is ultimately involved here—the community in question is precisely one of solitudes. Meanwhile, French rather dislikes joining two nouns together with any preposition other than de, so instead of a simple en to join solitudes and commumauté, I use the more elaborate existant en.
