When, in English, we want to contrast one group of humans with another (or perhaps with all the rest of humanity), we say things like “we women” and “you men” (“You men are all alike”), placing an equal emphasis on both words and putting as it were a slight pause between them. In French, the same is achieved by inserting an autres in between the two words: nous autres femmes, vous autres hommes. (For this usage, I always think of what a character in a Claire Bretécher strip says: Nous sommes faibles, nous autres femmes… [“We women are weak…”].)
The combination of the personal pronoun nous/vous + autres may have an ancient pedigree in Western Romance languages, since we also find it embodied in the Spanish personal pronouns nosotros and vosotros. (Western Romance languages include French and Spanish, but not Italian; see here.)
