The lines are the very first of “Nothing But Stones,” one of my favorite poems by Ella Wheeler Wilcox, best-selling American versifier at the turn of the twentieth century. I translate the two iambic pentameter lines as two classical alexandrines: unrhymed, since they are the first two lines of a “rime croisée” (ABAB).
